The Ninja Mouse Fly is a concept that I have been fishing and tweaking for years. It has the same exact chassis as the two footer mouse- but I have finally found a way to construct the palmered schlappen body that is easily reproducible and durable enough to last for many nights of toothy trout encounters. Schlappen fibers are very long and flexible, and so the Ninja Mouse breathes, pulses, and undulates in the water in a way that no fully synthetic fly really can. The natural taper to the fly is very lifelike and creates a supremely effective, dark silhouette that nocturnal predators can’t resist.
One of the primary reasons I am adding this fly to the arsenal is how easy it is to cast, relative to its bulk. It feels as light and turns over like the medium trap mouse, but it has twice the bulk and profile in the water. Again, this is the magic of Schlappen.
During the summer of 2022, we landed a 20lb 3oz monster on a prototype of this fly- to my knowledge, the largest trout ever landed in public water on a mouse fly.
