The Hot Chocolate Midge is a response to the fantastic effectiveness of the Peliwhopper Midge. I like to fish two different flies at a time, and I wanted something similar to the Peliwhopper but different enough that I can catch the eye of a fish who isn’t looking for a wine midge. Overall the color hues on the Hot Chocolate midge are warmer than the Peliwhopper. I often fish this chironomid when the sun is out and it seems to be a good choice in highly pressured areas where fish see a lot of hooks. Brown midges aren’t always better than wine, but they frequently are and this pattern is a good way to set your bug apart from the crowd. Like all of my Pyramid Lake Chironomids, it’s tied on my Lahontan Midge Hook to securely stick giant cutthroat and uses large tungsten beads to get it into the feeding zone and keep it there.
